Nick Vafiadis, Business Director – Polyolefins & PVC, CMAI

Nick Vafiadis graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 earning a BBA in Management. Prior to joining CMAI, Nick’s work experience included twelve years with Condea Vista Company. While at Condea Vista, Nick held positions in Marketing, Product Management, and Sales Management in both the Vinyls and Surfactant business areas. Nick’s most recent assignment at Condea Vista was as Sales Manager PVC Compounds where he was responsible for global sales and marketing activities. Nick joined CMAI in April of 2002. His initial responsibilities focused on the vinyl product chain where he contributed analysis to the Monomers Market Report, the Chlor-Alkali Market Report and the Global Plastics and Polymers Market Report. In 2003, Nick assumed responsibility for CMAI’s North American polyolefins practice and in 2005 was named Service Leader for the Global Plastics and Polymers Report. In addition to his report related duties, Nick provides CMAI clients with individual consulting support related to specific projects.

He is primarily responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of the company’s resins used in pipe applications, as well as the development of HDPE, PP, PB-1 and PEX in pipe. Prior to this position, he was responsible for the company’s Technical Marketing activities for Hostalen resins used in pipe. Among his many other positions, he was responsible for Plastics Application Engineering with Hoechst subsidiary Plastomark in Johannesburg for five years. He joined LyondellBasell predecessor company Hoechst in 1974. He studied processing technology at the RWTH in Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), in Germany. Ulrich is currently serving as President to the PE100+ Association.

Ignacio Munoz de Juan earned his Engineering PhD degree in Zaragoza (Spain), specializing in composites and new materials. He held the position of R&D manager in Plastic Division of the main Spanish building material company (turnover nearly $2 billion) for several years. He has been involved in the latest programs for pipe systems developments and for sewage and pressure plastic pipes. He is responsible for PVC-O project for many years, and has developed an in-batch system for producing PVC-O pipes up to 400 mm (14") and 25 bar (362 psi). He has lead all the marketing and technical aspects for production in the South European market. He has been Spanish expert delegate for Standardization, being a member of the ISO committee for PVC-O standard (ISO 16422) and other EN programs. Since 2006, Mr. Munoz has been CEO of Molecor Tech, a company specializing in the Molecular orientation field. Its new technology for PVC-O pipes is a step beyond in the pipe industry.

Andreas Frank studied Polymer Engineering and Science at the University of Leoben (Austria). After finishing his master thesis about “Thermomechanical characterization of single- and multilayer paint films for coil coated steel sheets”, he received his M.Sc. in 2006. Since 2005 he has been working at the Polymer Competence Center Leoben GmbH (PCCL, Leoben, Austria). He changed into the pipe group of the PCCL as a researcher in 2007, with the main focus on fracture mechanics and morphological characterization of polyethylene pipes. In this field he finished his Ph.D. about “Fracture Mechanics Based Lifetime Assessment and Long-term Failure Behavior of Polyethylene Pressure Pipes” at the University of Leoben in 2010. He published and presented about 20 papers concerning his research work. He also has received the ANTEC Best Paper Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers in the Polymer Analysis Division in 2009. Recently, he has been leading several projects about long-term failure of polyethylene pipes and geomembranes as a Project Manager at the PCCL.

Mr. Jarno Hassinen is currently employed as project manager for Exova Group’s pipe testing laboratory located in Sweden where he has had quality assurance, technical business development responsibilities. The expertise for the Swedish laboratory is focused on the lifetime performance and expectancy of polyolefin resins used for pressure piping applications. He joined Exova Group in 2001 after finishing research studies on behalf of Bodycote and Ciba Specialty Chemicals at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. The successful results led to master thesis and a scientific publication in the field of oxidative resistance of chlorinated water and additive depletion in polyethylene. Mr. Hassinen is active within ISO standardisation for Plastics pipes, fittings and valves for the transport of fluids (ISO/TC 138) and is member of the Hydrostatic Stress Board (HSB) of Plastics Pipes Institute (PPI) in North America.

Mr. Jürgen Heinemann is a scientific associate and test engineer with the plastics department of State Materials Testing Institute Darmstadt and the Chair and Institute of Materials Technology, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, since December 2007. His research field is the determination of strength characteristics and lifetime analysis on plastics. Currently Mr. Heinemann is working on his PhD-thesis about the influence of residual stresses on lifetime prediction for plastic pipes. His work also comprises the qualification of plastic pipes according to national and international standards and accreditation regulations for different accreditation bodies, including the supervision of the production plants of pipe producers. Furthermore Mr. Heinemann is concerned with teaching activities within the area of materials science. Mr. Heinemann was educated at Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, and holds a Diploma Degree in Business Administration with Mechanical Engineering.

Professor Lang graduated in Polymer Engineering and Science in 1978 (University of Leo-ben) and obtained a PhD degree in 1984 (Lehigh University, USA). He then joined BASF AG (D), holding a research and group leader position in the field of advanced composites. In 1991 he became Full Professor at the University of Leoben, acting also as Director of the Polymer Competence Center Leoben from 2002 to 2008. Since September 2009 he holds the Chair of Polymeric Materials and Testing at the JKU Linz. His research focus is in the field of fracture and fatigue of plastics and composites and in the application of polymers in solar energy technologies.

Andrea Guevara-Morales is a Mechanical Engineering PhD student at Imperial College London. After graduating from Mechatronics Engineering at ITESM-Mexico in 2006 she came to Imperial College for a Master Degree in Advanced Mechanical Engineering. Her work on epoxy-clay nanocomposites for electrical insulation applications was awarded the Unwin Postgraduate Prize in Mechanical Engineering. She is currently investigating the fracture of multilayer polymers at the Deformation and Fracture of Polymers group at Imperial College. Her studies are funded by the National Council of Science and Technology-Mexico and Radius Systems Ltd.

Ashish Sukhadia obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1991. He joined Chevron Phillips (then Phillips Petroleum) in 1991. From 1991 – 2001, he was Team Leader, Polymer Processing. From 2001-2009, he was Manager, Polymer Science. He is currently the Global Polyethylene Applications Manager. His group at Chevron Phillips is responsible for Technical Service and Material/Application Development functions relating to blown and cast film, extrusion coating, pipe, blow-molding, rotational molding, sheet and geomembrane applications. He holds 20 US patents and has authored/co-authored 35 conference/journal publications to date. He has been a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) since 1986, is currently serving on the SPE EPSDIV Board.

Linda Havermans - van Beek graduated at the Eindhoven University of Technology in Biomedical Engineering in 2003. In 2007, she obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry in the same university under the supervision of Prof E. W. Meijer and Prof R.P. Sijbesma. She joined the Technology and Innovation department of SABIC in The Netherlands in 2008 as Materials Development Engineer. Presently, her main activities concern the developments within bimodal HDPE for utility pipe applications. She is particularly interested in structure-property relations. During her lecture, she will present to you the advantages of SABIC’s strain hardening method for the fast and reliable prediction of slow crack growth behaviour of HDPE pressure pipes.
